Exploring Budapest, Hungary

The Hungarian capital is one of the largest and most historic in Europe, and it is no surprise that many people come to visit the city every year.  Lying in Eastern Europe on the banks of the Danube down the way from Austria, Budapest has long been an important city in terms of the relationship between East and West, and the city was also an important power base in the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires.  Today the city is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful and interesting places to visit in Europe, and it is a location that is well worth a visit.

Sightseeing In Budapest

The city of Budapest was originally made up of two cities, Buda and Pest, with one lying on each bank of the Danube facing the other, but there are also seven islands lying within the Danube across the span of the city.  There are several parts of the city that have been recognized by UNESCO as important sites, and the Buda Castle is one of the most important today, occupying a prominent position overlooking the river.  The opulence of the interior and the wonderful castle chapel are among the main areas of the castle to explore.

Another of the impressive sights to be enjoyed in Budapest is St Stephen’s Basilica, which is the most important Roman Catholic site in the city, where the right hand of the first king of Hungary is kept.  The basilica stands in a prominent square and is a truly beautiful place to visit.  The Hungarian Parliament building is also an important site on the tourist trail in Budapest, which also has a prominent location overlooking the river.  For those who are looking to find out more about the city’s history, there are over 200 museums available to visit.

Relaxing In A Thermal Spa

Another of the reasons that many people visit Budapest is to visit the luxurious spas that are located around the city.  The thermal springs in the area have meant that there are a number of grand medicinal and Turkish baths that visitors can enjoy, and relax while they receive a luxurious treatment.

As a cosmopolitan city catering to all manner of visitors, the city can boast accommodations ranging from the basic hostel up to luxurious hotels.  Staying in one of the many fab hostels in Budapest makes for a great base from which to explore this historic city.

Transport Around The City

Getting around the city is quite straightforward, with a good network of buses, trams, and a metro system that is easy to use for visitors.  The Danube is often used by container ships and for the transportation of goods, but in the summer there is also a hydrofoil service up the river to Vienna, for those looking to explore a little further.

Although it caters for only a very short journey, there is a funicular railway that can take passengers up castle hill, and offers some great views back across the city. When looking for a good European vacation spot, this should be high on your list.
